Origins of Janus

In Roman mythology, Janus was the god of transition, transformation, endings and new beginnings. Janus was concerned with travelling, trading and shipping. He presided over births, journeys and exchange, as well as the beginning and ending of conflict. A temple in ancient Rome named in his honour also had special significance. The temple doors, known as the 'Gates of Janus' were opened in times of war and closed to mark the arrival of peace.

He is typically pictured with two faces, each looking in opposite directions – one gazing back and the other towards the future. He represents a junction point between the old ways and new opportunities in a rapidly changing world.
